National Aviation Day in the U.S., August 19th

In celebration of National Aviation Day on August 19th we are showing a collection of Air Mail Stamps and Stamps with Aircraft. This national holiday was established by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1939 designating the anniversary of Orville Wright's birthday as National Aviation Day. Via the web we search out links associated with the collection that we find of interest and include them here for you. Many links contain interesting historical tidbits about the stamps themselves or the historical significance represented by the imagery on the stamp. We hope you will enjoy this collection!

A 1937 cover carried on the Hindenburg with stamps that include a Hitler miniature
sheet and in the lower right a stamp honoring Count von Zeppelin, all cancelled by “On Board” postmarks dated “5.5. 1937”—the day before the explosion and fire. The black cancels celebrate Hitler’s 48th birthday, on April 20, 1937.

Air Mail Postage - French Southern and Antarctic Territory
France

An unusual example of Air Mail Postage, from the French Southern and Antarctic Territory, showing stamps issued between 1959 and 1963. It's ironic to have early
Air Mail stamps featuring a creature that cannot fly. Nowadays they use all sorts of
themes and subjects on airmails but the early ones usually had planes or aviators...
some times planes flying over landmarks.

France

This is a French post card celebrating a flight by Count Charles de Lambert above
the Eiffel Tower on October 18, 1909. Note that it was in a Wright Flyer, but not a
flight by the Wright Brothers. The card was later used, on October 18, 1959, with a
50th anniversary commemorative cancel. The stamps do not relate to the event . . .
they are two test pilots, Charles Goujon and Col. Constantin Rozanoff.
