Mauritius, philatelically famous for her “POST OFFICE” issue, is a British Island Colony lying in the Indian Ocean [off the southeast coast of Africa] some 550 miles east of the Island of Madagascar. The Island was first discovered by the Portuguese in the Sixteenth Century and later settled by the Dutch, who finally abandoned it in 1710.
